European Energy, partners prepare for pilot SAF production from 2024

Danish renewables developer European Energy A/S on Thursday said that a company-led consortium has launched the project that targets the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at a pilot plant in Denmark from 2024.

The project, called MeSAF, will produce SAF from carbon dioxide (CO2) and green hydrogen. It uses the technology of US company Vertimass which simplifies the process of converting methanol into aviation fuel.

The pilot facility in Aalborg could lead to the construction of a full-scale plant with production of at least 10,000 tonnes per year.

The Danish technology development programme (EUDP) is supporting the USD-2.6-million MeSAF project with USD 1.37 million.

"With this new technology from Vertimass we expect to be able to make use of our existing experience in e-methanol and deliver a sustainable product that is cost competitive, and where the ingredients in the form of wind, solar and CO2, in principle are unlimited,” said Soren Knudsen Kaer, head of technology at European Energy.

Besides European Energy and Vertimass, the team includes Aalborg Airport, Aalborg University, Hydrogen Valley, Port of Aalborg and Kosan Gas, which will sell the by-product from the production of aviation fuel as renewable gas.
